Visual anomalies are often reported in spontaneous case investigations, with apparitions being the most well-known of these phenomena. When investigating reports of apparitions, a common initial step taken by researchers is to ensure the location is in total darkness. While cutting electricity to a building can be beneficial in some instances, it's not always the best practice to turn off all the lights, especially when searching for visual phenomena. Most reports of ghostly figures and shadows occur under conditions where they can be seen - typically not in complete darkness - so it makes sense to keep the lights on during the investigation.
