Intelligent hauntings, also known as interactive hauntings, are what most people consider to be a traditional or classic "ghost."

It's believed that in this type of haunting, a spirit manifests or communicates in some way with intent as the result of an intelligent consciousness. This can include disembodied voices, responsive knocks and bangs, as well as leaving a sign such as a significant or meaningful object, or moving objects in such a way as to communicate a message, desire, or course of action.

A common belief relating to intelligent hauntings is that the spirit requires help from the living world or has a message to deliver to those they have left behind. It's said that the spirit might not know they have passed, often have unfinished business, and may need help passing on.
