The most common ways to log an investigation are to either use an audio recorder, a video camera, or a notebook. While notebooks are great, they can't be seen in the dark, which can be a problem during an investigation. An audio recorder is a good option for making a record of everything that occurs, as is a video camera, which has the added benefit of being able to capture any visual evidence too.
